Samskritam Classes for Adults: Find Your Learning Journey

Samskrita Bharati USA offers structured and progressive learning programs designed for adults (18+) at every stage, from absolute beginner to advanced scholar. Whether you prefer in-person community learning, a formal online certificate, or deep academic study, we have a path for you.

1. Abhimukha-Varga (In-Person Classes)

These classes offer a unique, community-focused approach where you learn Sanskrit through Sanskrit itself, even with no prior experience.

  • Format: Structured, in-person classes conducted at local Samskrita Kendrams (community centers).
  • Goal: To take students from basic conversation (Sambhaˉṣaṇa) to the ability to read and understand original Sanskrit texts (kaˉvyas, Sˊlokas, Bhagavad Gita).
  • Curriculum: A five-level progression that builds conversational skills first, then moves to structural understanding, and finally advanced comprehension.
  • Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of Samskritam is required, but a working knowledge of at least one Indian language is highly recommended.
  • Levels: Progression through Level 1 to Level 5 prepares students to take the Pravesha, Paricaya, Sˊikṣaˉ, and Kovida exams (part of the Distance Learning Program).

2. Sambhashana taḥ Shastraparyantam (s2s Certificate Course)

The “From Conversation to Sˊaˉstra” (s2s) course is a formal, multi-year online certificate program offered in partnership with Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University (KKSU).

  • Objective: To systematically bridge the gap between spoken Sanskrit and the complex grammatical and philosophical language of classical texts (Sˊaˉstra-s).
  • Duration & Certification: A four-year certificate course for successful students, culminating in an official certificate from KKSU.
  • Format: Online classes, typically held once a week for 90 minutes, with interactive teaching methods.
  • Course Structure (Four Main Years):
    • S1 (Sambhashanam): Focus on essential listening and speaking skills.
    • S2 (Bhaṣa): Introduction to fundamental Vyaˉkaraṇam (grammar) concepts.
    • S3 (Pragata-Bhaṣa): Coverage of advanced grammar concepts related to Saˉhityam (literature).
    • S4 (Sahityam/Sˊaˉstram): Exploration of literature excerpts and/or Nyaˉya Sˊaˉstra texts.

3. Pragata-Varga (Advanced Classes)

These classes are designed for students who have completed the core learning paths and are ready to engage in deep academic study of specialized Sˊaˉstra-s (disciplines of knowledge).

  • Medium of Instruction: All instruction is conducted exclusively in the Sanskrit medium (Samskrita Medium).
  • Scope: The topics are wide-ranging, covering specialized subjects beyond the foundational curriculum.
  • Example Topics: Vyaˉkaraṇa-Sˊaˉstram (Grammar), Aˉyurvedaḥ (Traditional Medicine), Vedaˉnta, and Aṣṭaˉdhyaˉyıˉ.
  • Prerequisites: Completion of foundational Sanskrit learning or demonstrated equivalent proficiency is required.
